About the Business

Down Quilt House has been a family-run business for nearly 75 years. Our grandmother, Mrs. Thompson, opened the furnishings store in 1939 at No.18 Hallgate, Doncaster, South Yorkshire. It specialised in manufacturing feather quilts, hence the name. Within months of opening the Second World War was declared and huge quantities of blackout lining were sold, establishing the drapery side of the business.

Throughout the decades Down Quilt House gained a reputation as Doncaster's finest soft furnishing store. Products changed with fashions and, as well as selling many designer curtain fabrics, there were carpets, curtain poles, rugs, furniture, wallpapers and haberdashery for sale. Bespoke curtain making, carpet fitting and re-upholstery services were also offered. Twelve sewing ladies and a team of fitters were employed at the shop's Queens Road warehouse, a short distance from the town centre.
